Bryan Moores: Earned entitlement

May 10, 2014

I must comment on the May 6 Catherine Rampell column “ Millennials have trust issues.” Her piece discusses the way young people are viewed by the media and by people in general.

In the column, she states, “Those of us who have jobs are, of course, already subsidizing our elders by paying the taxes that fund their entitlements.” Her statement implies that we retirees are wallowing at the government troughs helping ourselves to money to which we are not entitled.

I, and many others, have worked all our lives paying taxes and paying into the federal retirement fund we know as Social Security. We paid into it.

She uses the word “entitlement” as if it’s a dirty word, as do many others in our society, including politicians. An entitlement means that we receive money that has been earned and to which we are entitled.

For Rampell’s information, I have never referred to her generation as “lazy parasites.” I will finish by saying that I have never lived on the largesse of the U.S. government, and I expect only what is due to me.
