RALEIGH — Greyhound buses will operate from the companys new station on Capital Boulevard starting Wednesday, leaving the downtown station where Greyhound and other inter-city buses have operated since the early 1970s.
The new station is in a former restaurant three miles north of downtown, at the corner of Capital and Crabtree boulevards. It is closer to the Interstate 440 Beltline, but is about three miles from the citys main CAT bus and Amtrak stations downtown.
The old station on Jones Street is just east of the booming Glenwood South district, making it a prime piece of real estate. Greyhound sold its 1.72-acre downtown site last year to developer Ted Reynolds for $4.75 million well above its tax value of $3.38 million. Reynolds, who built the 15-story Quorum Center office and condo building across from the station, hasn't announced plans for the site.
Greyhound has a 10-year lease on the Capital Boulevard property. The company says it hasnt ruled out returning to downtown Raleigh as part of the Union Station project, a planned train station in the Warehouse District that city officials hope will eventually include a bus depot.
