Spill sends 76,000 gallons of sewage into Knightdale creek

From staff reportsMay 13, 2014

— A faulty valve on a pump caused more than 76,000 gallons of untreated sewage to spill into a unnamed tributary of Mingo Creek in Knightdale, according to the Raleigh Public Utilities Department.

Someone reported the spill about 5 p.m. Monday at 7526 Knightdale Blvd., near North 1st Ave. Sewage had apparently been overflowing for about five days, and city officials estimate that 76,200 gallons reached the unnamed stream that leads into Mingo Creek.

City workers stopped the leak by 9 p.m. Monday and expected to finish cleaning up the spill by noon Tuesday.

Raleigh provides water and sewer service to several Wake County towns, including Knightdale.
