Yankees place Beltran on DL

Flushing, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - The New York Yankees placed outfielder Carlos Beltran on the 15-day disabled list Thursday with right elbow inflammation.

Beltran was forced to exit Monday's contest against the New York Mets in the seventh inning after hyperextending his elbow while taking swings in the indoor cage in between at-bats.

The 37-year-old outfielder went 0-for-3 prior to leaving the game.

Through 33 games this season, Beltran batted .234 with 10 doubles, five home runs and 15 RBI. His move to the DL is retroactive to Tuesday.

The Yankees also purchased the contract of pitcher Chase Whitley from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and named him the starter for Thursday's series finale against the Mets.

Whitley will be making his Major League debut after going 3-2 with a 2.39 earned run average over seven games, including six starts. The 24-year-old right-hander struck out 32 hitters in just 26 1/3 innings this season.

New York designated pitcher Bruce Billings for assignment to make room for Whitley on the 40-man roster.
