Refresh Your Style: Karen Havey

Sheon@SheonTheStylist.comMay 17, 2014

Karen Havey, 54, is a friendly, bubbly wife and mother of three who is often mistaken for an elderly woman – and she’s sick of it. “No matter what I do to update my look, I am regularly asked about my grandchildren and/or if I qualify for the senior citizen discount,” she wrote. “Would you help me solve the mystery of ‘The Woman Who is Aging Before Her Time’?”

I’ll take that on. I showed Havey how hipper clothes, fresher makeup and deeper hair color can take years off her appearance.

Before the makeover, Havey wore cool colors that looked dull against her skin, and her ashy hair color brought out the ruddiness in her complexion. She sported a top that shortened her leg line, and her shoes were functional but frumpy.

Paul Mitchell Salon in Raleigh provided a free makeup and hairstyling session for this makeover.

Makeup artist Katherine Henderson used a warm beige foundation to even out Havey’s complexion. She chose a bronze eye shadow that brought out her blue-gray eyes, and applied blush to give her a healthy glow. Brown-red lipstick shows off Havey’s smile. Hairstylist Yesenia Vazquez mitigated the ashiness of her hair, coloring it a golden brown that harmonizes with her skin and eyes. Result: She looks lively and fresh.

For a casual outfit to complement Havey’s trim figure, we chose jeans by Silver and a Pink Owl patterned blouse in spring colors. Fly London shoes in mustard with a gray accent on the vamp provided a surprise element that offered a glimpse of Havey’s fun personality. A salmon crossbody handbag added another pop of color, along with her own gold earrings. Bracelet was stylist’s own.

We tossed out the old ban on wearing white before Memorial Day, too. A pair of white pants by Slimsation provided Havey a perfect wardrobe staple for spring and were a perfect foil for a dark teal Emma G wrap top that hugged her hips. We added a punch of color and style with a lightweight scarf in colors that complemented Havey’s skin tone and continued finished the look with her own on-trend metallic sandals.

Havey was thrilled with how youthful she looked and felt.

“Wow! Look at me!” she said during the photo shoot. “Maybe I won’t be mistaken for a grandmother now.”
