Renovation of old Capital Club space begins

Construction has begun to expand and renovate the space formerly known as the Cardinal Club on the 28th and 29th floors of the Wells Fargo Capitol Center along Fayetteville Street.

The club is being renamed City Club Raleigh as its owner, Dallas-based ClubCorp, consolidates the operations of the Cardinal Club and the Capital City Club, which had operated out of the building at 410 S. Wilmington St.

The two clubs had essentially been operating as a single club since 2009, but will now share a single location.

The Cardinal Club space is being expanded about 2,000 square feet to 23,000 square foot. The $3 million project will include a new bar and casual dining area overlooking Fayetteville Street. It is expected to be completed in August.

The recession hurt membership in private clubs such as the two in downtown Raleigh. The two clubs membership totaled more than 2,100 when the renovation plan was announced in August, compared to more than 3,000 prior to the recession.
