— Daniel Spingola’s two-run triple keyed a five-run second inning that lifted Georgia Tech past Wake Forest 5-3 in an Atlantic Coast Conference tournament play-in game.

The ninth-seeded Yellow Jackets (33-24) advanced into round-robin play at the tournament and will face top-seeded Miami on Wednesday.

The loss eliminates Wake Forest (30-26) from the tournament.

Georgia Tech’s Mitch Earnest hit an RBI double that scored Ryan Peurifoy, and Earnest and Brandon Gold scored one batter later on Spingola’s triple to right field.

Mott Hyde followed with a triple to score Spingola, and he scored on Matt Gonzalez’s single.

Wake Forest got on the board in the third inning as Matt Conway singled through the middle to score Conor Keniry. After Keniry singled with two outs and advanced to second on a wild pitch, Charlie Morgan walked to bring up Conway. Conway then edged a hit through the middle to score Keniry.

The Deacons loaded the bases in the fourth inning with two outs, but Georgia Tech got a strikeout to get out of the jam. Then with the bases loaded in the fifth inning, Grant Shambley pinch hit for Kevin Jordan and sent an RBI-single up the middle to score two.

Winner Sam Clay (4-1) relieved starter Matthew Grimes in the fifth and worked three scoreless innings. Losing pitcher Jack Fischer (4-7) allowed 11 hits in 5 1/3 innings.
