Most experienced teachers left out of McCrory pay plan

Gov. Pat McCrory’s teacher pay plan excludes teachers with the most experience, according to the N.C. Association of Educators.

Marge Foreman of NCAE discovered the omission as she prepared details on the proposal to distribute to members. Teachers with more than 36 years experience wouldn’t receive the 2 percent raises McCrory proposed for veteran teachers, leaving out nearly 1,500 people.

In past administrations, teachers beyond the top of the pay scale received bonuses, NCAE said.

“This is a slap in the face to those educators who have given most of their lives to the children of this state,” and signals that McCrory “puts the most experienced teachers at the bottom of his priority list,” NCAE President Rodney Ellis said in a statement.

The most veteran teachers would have the chance to earn more, said McCrory's top education adviser.

“The state salary schedule tops out at 36 steps and Governor McCrory’s budget proposal simply funds the current salary schedule in its current form , “ Eric Guckian said in a statement.

“We value our veteran educators and the experience and wisdom that they bring to the students they teach,” he said. We're committed to ensuring that all teachers will have the opportunity to earn significantly more for the important work they do for our students. The Career Pathways for Teachers framework offers incentives for all teachers, particularly those that are leading other teachers, and our most experienced teachers would have an excellent opportunity to earn more under the plan the governor proposed a few short weeks ago."

Legislators will write and approve their own versions of the budget. Although legislators are committed to raises for teachers and state employees, there’s no guarantee that McCrory’s pay proposals will end up in the final version.
