Brian Turner: GOP losing support

May 24, 2014

Regarding the May 21 news article “ Panels vote to hasten fracking”: I want to congratulate Sen. E.S. “Buck” Newton and other Republicans on their efforts toward making hydraulic fracturing (fracking) a reality in North Carolina.

Estimates indicate that the energy released by fracking would power the state for five years. According to an economist from N.C. State University, gas well construction and drilling operations would create about $80 million in annual economic activity and sustain, on average, 496 new jobs a year.

Yes, North Carolina Republicans are willing to risk everyone’s access to clean drinking water for 500 jobs and an energy source that runs out before this decade ends.

Apparently, they are also willing to risk losing support from a longtime Republican like myself. I have been a Republican since I first registered to vote at 18, but I can no longer stand by a party or individuals who are no longer conservative. To be conservative one needs to be disposed to preserve existing conditions. The existing condition I wish to preserve is a beautiful, clean and unpolluted North Carolina.
