Mrs. John Gray Melvin

Emily Hayworth Long and John Gray Melvin were married on Saturday May 10, 2014 at 5:30 p.m. in the afternoon at Saint Mary’s Chapel in Raleigh, NC. The Reverend William Emory Smyth of Columbia, NC officiated. Following the ceremony, a reception was held at the Pavilions at the Angus Barn. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Bourne Long of Raleigh, NC. She is the granddaughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Robert L. Howard of Carthage, NC and the late Mr. and Mrs. Willie Jones Long, Jr. of Roanoke Rapids, NC. She is a graduate of Saint Mary’s School in Raleigh, NC and a graduate from ECU in Greenville, NC with a BS degree in Recreation and Park Management. Escorted and given in marriage by her father, the bride wore a full length Lian Carlo gown with Alecon lace and a Vera Wang sash along with her mother’s veil trimmed with Alecon lace. She carried an all white bouquet featuring peonies, roses, hydrangeas and lambs ear created by Warthen Lane Interiors of Sandersville, GA. The maid of honor was Audrey Bourne Long, sister of the bride, of Denmark, SC. The bridesmaids were Joy Renee Bradley of Raleigh, NC; Martha Stockton Brown of Virginia Beach, VA; Carolina Martha Mebane of Durham, NC; Rebecca Danielle Orzechowski of Alexandria, VA; Ashton Elizabeth Turner of Elizabeth City, NC; Lauren Alden Turner of Elizabeth City, NC; and Meredith Cameron Vaughn of Tampa, FLA. The junior bridesmaid was Mayla Francis Gilliam of Wake Forest, NC. The flower girl was Julianna Jackson Renfrow of Wake Forest, NC.

The groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Roger William Melvin of Wake Forest, NC. He is the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Francis Marion Toney of Louisburg, NC and Mrs. Martha Honeycutt Melvin of Harrisburg, NC and the late L. G. Melvin. He is also the grandson of the late Mrs. Edna Amerson Toney. The groom is a graduate of Ravenscroft School in Raleigh, NC and received a BA in History from ECU in Greenville, NC. He is currently employed with Toney Ace Hardware in Louisburg, NC. Roger William Melvin, father of the groom served as best man. Groomsmen were Jordan Paul Abbott of Palm City, FLA; Robert Thomas Carr of Wilson, NC; Donald Eugene Cook III of Raleigh, NC; Ryan Michael Dean Cook of Chapel Hill, NC; Carl Louis Doughtie of Tarboro, NC; Brian Aaron House of Wilson, NC; and Cade Barrett Turner of Greenville, NC. Luke Anderson Hannah, cousin of the bride, of Advance, NC served as ring bearer. Also assisting for the wedding were Joel King Bourne, Jr., godfather of the bride, of Wilmington, NC and Alice Elizabeth Howard, cousin of the bride, of Greensboro, NC as Scripture Readers. Caroline Clarkson Brown of Garysburg, NC and Louisa Holloman Burgwyn of Jackson, NC served as program attendants. Elizabeth Talbot Davis of Richmond, VA served as crucifer.

Music during the ceremony was provided by David Witt, organist and the DeForest String Artists. Following a honeymoon to Santorini, Greece, the couple will reside in Dubois, WY where they will both be employed at CM Ranch.
