  • Other highlights

    • Chatham County Line is at Durham’s Carolina Theatre Friday. Carolina Lightnin’ will play bluegrass in the Courtyard at Durham’s Brightleaf Square Friday and at Pittsboro’s Carolina Brewery on Saturday.

    • The Haw River Ballroom in Saxapahaw hosts the immensely talented Lucinda Williams for shows on Monday and Tuesday. Also Tuesday, Jeff Austin, formerly mandolin player with Yonder Mountain String Band, brings his band to Lincoln Theatre in Raleigh on Tuesday.

With the passing of bluegrass music’s first generation and the graying of its second, the future of traditional bluegrass may at times seem to be in doubt. That’s why fans of hard-driving, high-lonesome, Monroe-style bluegrass welcome the arrival of Town Mountain. Winner of IBMA’s 2013 Momentum Award, the Asheville-based quintet’s combination of original songs and smartly arranged covers features the wide-open vocals of Robert Greer fronting the instrumental versatility of his award-winning partners. Friday, Town Mountain rolls into Raleigh’s Southland Ballroom to pick and sing selections from their Pinecastle CD, “Leave the Bottle,” and other surprises in the spirit of the masters.
