School bus drivers from across the state demonstrated their driving skills during the North Carolina School Bus ROADeo competition at the NC State Fairgrounds in Raleigh on Thursday.

Drivers, who advanced to the state finals from District competitions, were required to perform eight different maneuvers on a closed course with tennis balls, traffic cones and plastic gates outlining paths. In addition to a straight-line tennis ball test and narrowing gate test, the drivers had to parallel park, stop, back up, simulate a railroad crossing and navigate turns. Competitors were judged on accuracy of driving with demerits for infractions and timed on several of the events.

The winner received $500 and the chance to compete in the national competition later this year in Charleston, S.C.
