Passenger killed in single-car accident on I-40

— A 20-year-old male passenger was killed Thursday afternoon when the vehicle he was riding in left the eastbound lane of I-40 between the Wade Avenue and Chapel Hill Road interchanges and entered a wooded area.

At approximately 4:45 p.m. Thursday, a 2001 Toyota sedan was eastbound on I-40 when its 18-year-old female driver lost control of the vehicle, which left the road to the right and entered a wooded area.

A male who was riding in the front passenger's seat was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver and an 18-year-old male, who was a rear-seat passenger, were transported to WakeMed with serious injuries.

Raleigh Police have not released the names of the driver or passengers. The investigation of the crash is continuing.
