William Clifford: Fletcher nails issues

June 1, 2014

Regarding the May 24 letter “ Using poverty as an excuse”: Wake County school board member Bill Fletcher is exactly right. The school system needs the resources to meet the needs of all children, regardless of their backgrounds.

His letter also underscores the important point that each Wake County classroom should a have teacher and an assistant who are paid a professional wage and have the resources to teach each child. And it is time for our community, both at the state and local levels, to give public schools the resources and tools (including local control) to meet the needs of all students.

Our public schools are underfunded, and the Wake County commission should fund the school board’s entire request to increase staff salaries and increase resources. The time is now.
