Each year from 2010 through 2012, Haywood County’s Balsam Range was nominated for bluegrass music’s Emerging Artist award. Close, but no banjo roll. Then, last year the band struck gold when its album “Papertown” won IBMA’s coveted Album of the Year. Their popularity has soared outward from their hometown of Canton in western North Carolina, with gigs as far afield as Dollywood, the Mountainview Bluegrass Festival in Arkansas and New Hampshire’s storied Sugar Shack Campground. On Thursday, Balsam Range will showcase its musical gifts at WUNC’s free Back Porch Music on the Lawn Series at the American Tobacco Campus in Durham. The show starts at 6 p.m. Info at americantobaccohistoricdistrict.com/events.
