Family Picks: A weekend to celebrate summer growth

CorrespondentJune 5, 2014

Durham’s Museum of Life and Science will have experts on hand at the Butterfly House patio on Saturday, and plus, visitors will receive a complimentary butterfly plant.

Summer’s nearly here and it’s the time for new growth: Trees, animals, insects – even museums, it appears, are all expanding. So whether it’s a week-old adult butterfly, a 7-year-old kids’ museum or a 50-year-old tree, celebrate growth this weekend.

• On Saturday, a new room opens in Marbles Kids Museum in downtown Raleigh. The Kid Grid exhibit aims to teach children how to make smart choices within a power grid, but also expands the museum by 900 square feet.

Museum admission is $5; free for members or infants under age 1. More information is available at

• Saturday in Pittsboro, Durham children’s author Bob Palmatier – the “Turtleman” – brings his terrapin-centric books and even a few hard-shelled friends to the Chatham Marketplace. The conservation-minded Palmatier’s books focus on specific regional turtle species – some endangered – meaning his 11 a.m.-4 p.m. visit will be entertaining as well as educational.

Visit or call 919-542-2643 for more information on this free event.

• It’s Butterfly Education and Awareness Day Saturday, and the Association For Butterflies recommends people celebrate by planting butterfly gardens or studying these pollinators’ life cycle. Durham’s Museum of Life and Science will have experts on hand at the Butterfly House patio – and visitors get a complimentary butterfly plant.

This runs 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Museum admission is $10-$14 (anyone 2 and younger gets in free). Visit for details.

• Even after a lifetime in North Carolina, some adults have no idea how to identify local tree species (the author, sadly, included). Don’t end up like me, kids. Go to Tree Trivia Sunday at Morrisville’s Lake Crabtree Park. The event is for those 8 and up, and registration is required by Saturday.

Tree Trivia runs 1 to 3 p.m. and is $5 per family, $3 for individuals. Call 919-460-2723 or email for more information.
