Victoria, BC (SportsNetwork.com) - Brock Mackenzie fired a 7-under 63 to grab a 1-stroke lead after the opening round of the Bayview Place Island Savings Open.

Mackenzie is seeking his second career victory on the PGA Tour Canada. His first win came at the 2010 Times Colonist Open.

Jake Sarnoff carded a 6-under 64 at Uplands Golf Club to sit alone in second place, while Riley Wheeldon and Michael Lavery shot matching 5-under 65s to share third.

PC Financial Open winner Joel Dahmen, Josh Persons, Devin Daniels, James Allenby, Drew Stoltz and Chris Ross were tied for fifth at 4-under 66.

Mackenzie started on the back nine and opened his round with birdies at the 10th and 12th. He later added another gain at the 16th to make the turn at 3- under.

Back-to-back birdies at the second and third moved him to minus-5, and he converted another pair of birdies at the sixth and seventh to move to 7-under.

He parred his final two holes to end there.

Sarnoff also posted a bogey-free round that included six birdies to finish a shot off the pace.

NOTES: Daniels recorded an albatross at the par-5 12th hole ... Defending champion Stephen Gangluff carded a 3-under 67 during his first round and is tied for 11th place.
