Hillsborough chamber director steps down

From staff reportsJune 6, 2014

— Margaret Cannell stepped down Friday as executive director of the Hillsborough/Orange County Chamber of Commerce, effectively immediately.

The announcement followed a meeting with Jason Richmond, board president and the chamber executive committee.

“We do not know Margaret’s plans at the moment,” Richmond said in a statement. “But the board has offered her its full support, whether she seeks employment or chooses to take some well-deserved time off. We are appreciative of her years of service to the chamber and wish her well. She will be missed.”

Cindy Mihok, assistant at the chamber, has also decided to leave, according to the statement.

Betsy Crittenden, has agreed to serve as interim executive director while the chamber launches a search for a new leader.

Richmond said the board will meet June 17 to map out the search process. “After that meeting, we will have a better idea of what our time frame will be. Ideally, we’d have someone in place at the beginning of the new year.”

“Transitions can be challenging, but I’m confident the chamber’s board can pull together and move forward,” he said. “It’s our desire to serve our membership effectively throughout this period of change and in the years to come.”

The Hillsborough/Orange County Chamber of Commerce serves over 270 members.

In January the chamber canceled the 32nd annual Hog Day, saying the event took six months to plan and strained the chamber’s two-person staff. The event brought 35,000 to downtown Hillsborough each year.

Instead, a volunteer committee will hold Hog Day June 20-21 at the Efland Ruritan Club at 3106 Highway 70 West in Efland.
