Linda Chamblee: Both parties to blame for low teacher salaries

June 7, 2014

Regarding the May 27 letter “ Dems had a role”: I would like to respond to a few of the writer’s statements.

First, the teacher organizations, NCAE/NEA, are not blaming the McCrory administration for not having a raise since 2007. They want this administration to do something about the problem.

Former Gov. Jim Hunt had a problem like this, and he brought up all teacher salaries over a period of years. North Carolina was no longer one of the lower-paying states, but it reached the national average. This is what the NCAE/NEA would like to see the McCrory administration do now.

I am a registered Democrat, but I will vote for the person I think will do the best job.

The letter-writer said the Democrats created the problem, but both parties have created the salary freeze over the last seven years. Instead of each party blaming the other like two kids in a sandbox, fix the problem like adults.
