Sexual-offense charge added in Zebulon warehouse case

— Police have added another charge against the man they say held a German woman captive for nearly a week at a Zebulon warehouse he rents.

After being arrested Monday and posting $90,000 bail late Tuesday, Robert E. Whiteside was arrested again by Zebulon police about 11:30 a.m. Wednesday. The new charge is one count of second-degree sexual offense.

“We ... located him back at the warehouse location, and he was charged with this as part of the same case,” said Zebulon Police Chief Tim Hayworth.

Whiteside was initially charged with sexual servitude involving an adult victim (human trafficking) and two counts of assault by strangulation.

The 34-year-old victim met Whiteside through an ad he posted online seeking a companion or wife, according to police.

Police said that Whiteside took away the woman’s financial and communication resources but that she managed to access a computer in the warehouse and email her estranged husband in Germany. The email helped lead police to the warehouse, at 511 Mack Todd Road, and subsequently led to Whiteside’s first arrest.

Hayworth said Wake County Judge Donald Stephens set Whiteside’s most recent bail at $750,000. Whiteside is scheduled for a first appearance on the new charge Thursday.
