Michael Taylor: Gambling on fundraising

June 12, 2014

Regarding the June 11 news article “ House, Senate budgets clash”: The GOP-dominated state Senate would offer N.C. teachers a pay increase by eliminating teacher aides and much of the Department of Education. The GOP-dominated state House would fund a pay hike by doubling the advertising budget for the lottery with the hope that our residents will generate more lottery revenue by betting more! Both of these ideas are so wrong it would take way more than your 200-word limit to review.

Since the “gamble more” plan comes from the Thom Tillis-led House, I can only assume he would take that same philosophy of how to pay for basic government operations to Washington and the U.S. Senate if he is elected. Now there is a plan for the party of family values to get behind – a national lottery to fund the federal budget. I can see it now, a new Vegas on the Potomac!
