A Canadian-based legwear company is expanding its operations in Burke County and expects to create 205 jobs by the end of 2018.

Richelieu Legwear, a subsidiary of Bonneterie Richelieu, plans to invest $16 million in a new plant in Hildebran, about 70 miles east of Asheville.

The company is eligible to receive up to $2.9 million over 12 years in state incentives if it meets jobs and investment milestones.

The average annual wage for the new jobs is expected to be $37,912, plus benefits. The Burke county average is $32,834.

Richeliue acquired the assets of International Legwear Group in Hildebran in 2011 and hired 45 of the company’s employees. Richelieu today employs more than 60 people in Hildebran.

Employees at the new facility will manufacture socks. Richelieu has a contract with Walmart to produce socks. The retailer is the company’s largest customer.
