Leaders in Raleigh and Durham are both backing state legislation that moves several small properties near Brier Creek from Raleigh to Durham.
It sounds odd, but the land itself wont move. The property, which totals about an acre near the intersection of T.W. Alexander Drive and ACC Boulevard, is currently inside Raleighs city limits. But the lots will be part of a much larger development called The Corners at Brier Creek and that developer wants to be annexed by the City of Durham.
Much of the development is located in Wake County, but in this area where the Triangles two biggest cities come together, that doesnt really matter. Several nearby Raleigh subdivisions are partially in Durham County, and Durham lays claim to some Wake County land.
So while Senate Bill 871 sounds like it could turn into a bitter game of monopoly, it has support from both sides. Planning staff from both cities, according to a memo sent to the Raleigh City Council, will work together to find a coordinated solution to ensure the developer is not caught between the jurisdictions.
The bill unanimously passed its second reading in the N.C. Senate last week. Once the land is securely in Durham, developers plan to seek rezoning for a mix of commercial and multifamily residential uses.
