Firsthand Foods, a Durham-based supplier of local pasture-raised beef, pork and poultry, has started offering a monthly subscription to consumers.

Think of it as the meat-only version of a weekly CSA subscription of fruits, vegetables, meat and eggs that local farmers offer to the public.

Firsthand Foods’ (M)eat Local box will be delivered monthly to pick-up locatins in Raleigh, Chapel Hill and Durham. Consumers can choose either a three-month subscription for a small box containing three- to four-pounds of meat or a large box with five- to seven-pounds meat. Prices range from $115-$195 for a three-month subscription.

The box’s contents will reflect the season with an emphasis on grilling cuts such as steaks in the summer and braising cuts like roasts in the winter. There will be a mix of items: pork loin chops, flat iron steaks, pork shanks, hangar steaks and marrow bones. Consumers can add frozen ground beef, sausages and pasture-raised whole chickens to their weekly box as well for an additional cost.

The boxes will be available for pick-up from 4-6 p.m. July 25, Aug. 22 and Sept. 19 at these locations: Wine Authorities in Raleigh, Sam’s Bottle Shop in South Durham, Firsthand Foods warehouse in East Durham and Hogan’s Magnolia View Farm in Chapel Hill.
