Storms topple trees in Durham, Orange, Johnston

From staff reportsJune 20, 2014

— Trees and tree limbs fell in Durham on Thursday afternoon as a thunderstorm blew through the area, and the National Weather Service said afternoon storms are possible starting Saturday and going into early next week.

Duke Energy officials said about 4,450 customers in Durham County lost power between 5 p.m. and 6:30 p.m., and all had been reconnected by Friday morning.

Trees brought down lines in several places during the late-afternoon storm.

The weather service recorded 0.27 inches of rain at Raleigh-Durham International Airport , and volunteer weather observer in Durham reported 0.22 inches, but locally heavy downpours were enough to slow drivers for a time.

The weather service said hail was reported in Swepsonville in eastern Alamance County, and trees and power lines were downed west of Hillsborough.

In Durham, officials reported trees were blown down at Trent Street and Erwin Road, near Duke University Medical Center, and at Holloway and Joyland streets.

The rain stopped, but unsettled weather continued into the night, and RDU recorded a 47 mph wind gust at 11:17 p.m.

Numerous trees were reportedly downed in the Smithfield area Thursday, and Johnston County Airport weather instruments measured a half-inch of rain between midnight and 1 a.m. Friday.

Friday’s forecast was for clear skies, but there was a 50 percent chance of rain predicted for Friday night.

The weather service said to expect thunderstorms to brew up in the afternoons from Saturday into early next week.
