Apex’s Sydnei Murphy named NC Gatorade Player of the Year for girls track and field

Apex’s Sydnei Murphy was named N.C. Gatorade Player of the Year in girls track and field.

Murphy won N.C. High School Athletic Association outdoor 4A titles in the triple jump (39-7.5) and long jump (19-5.25) and was second in the 100 meters. She was also sixth in the 200. In the indoor season, she won the long jump (19-4).

Last week at New Balance Nationals, she was second in the triple jump (41-7.25), third in the long jump (19-8) and 18th in the 100 (11.91).

In a press release, Apex coach Roy Cooper said, “Sydnei is one of the hardest working athletes that we have had in our program in the past 30 years.”

The press release also adds that Murphy has a weighted 4.37 GPA in the classroom and is a “devoted member of her church community and a math tutor in her school, she has volunteered locally on behalf of Habitat for Humanity and youth sports programs.”
