SOUTHERN PINES — Police are looking for the people who during early hours on Sunday vandalized and later stole a golf ball art statue designed and sponsored by the Southern Pines Boys & Girls Club.
The piece was on display at 181 NE Broad St. in downtown as a project by local Rotarians to raise money to support charities involving children, education and health care.
Police said the statue was vandalized at 1:30 a.m., when video shows a woman pulling the statue from its mounts and leaving it toppled on its side. Another woman and a pair of men were also present at the time of the vandalism and all left the scene together, according to police.
Surveillance footage shows the statue being picked up by two men and stolen at 2:32 a.m. They were accompanied by two females, police said, and all four suspects were last seen heading south on NE Broad Street.
