DURHAM — Southbound Interstate 85 will be closed from U.S. 15-501 in Durham to Exit 164 in Hillsborough each night starting Monday in the first phase of a repaving project that will run through the summer, according to the state Department of Transportation.
Work is scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. weeknights and 10 p.m. on weekends. The road should reopen at 6 a.m. daily.
The project involves resurfacing 11 miles of I-85, both northbound and southbound lanes, with alternating closures into September. The southbound closures beginning Monday should be in effect for about 10 nights, before workers turn their attention to the northbound lanes near Hillsborough.
The recommended detour for southbound traffic is to take U.S. 15-501 south to Interstate 40, then take I-40 west to its merger with I-85 south at I-85s Exit 163, a mile past the construction zone.
Closures will not occur if bad weather is expected to prevent work on a given night.
