Robert L. Mitten: War mistakes repeated

June 23, 2014

I am a veteran of the Vietnam War. As such, I appreciated the irony in the Editorial Section of the June 21 paper. On the one page were an editorial (“ Obama’s call”) and column (“ A cautious Obama misreads history”) commenting on the current situation in Iraq, including one that noted that we have spent trillions of dollars and thousands of lives in this effort.

On the other page was a reprint of a 1975 Doonesbury comic strip that showed the feelings of the Vietnam Veterans as they watched Saigon fall. I remember those feelings very well. It seems to me that we don’t learn our lessons, or as Yogi Berra once said: “It was deja vu all over again.”
