U.S. 70 closed near Garner by gas leak

— Authorities on Monday evening closed U.S. 70 near Garner in both directions due to a gas leak, according to the N.C. Department of Transportation.

The road was closed at about 8 p.m. near the highway’s intersection with Guy Road, between Garner and Clayton. The department urged motorists to use N.C. 42 and Interstate 40 to avoid the shut-down. A detour was in place.

Repairs could continue at least until 10 p.m., according to the department. About a dozen emergency vehicles were on scene by 8 p.m., including firetrucks, law-enforcement officers and medial personnel.
