Regarding the June 23 news article “ Fewer die as air rules tighten”: Wouldn’t it be nice if our state legislature paid attention to the fine research done by Duke University scientists showing that many North Carolina residents may have avoided illness and even death as a result of state and federal legislation that reduced air pollution, such as the Clean Air Act and the state’s Clean Smokestacks Act? But, I’m not holding my breath.
This legislature has shown remarkable short-sightedness, so I will not be surprised if it proceeded to reduce the number of stations monitoring air quality, as many of the legislators seem inclined to do. How sad for the many residents who will suffer illness and even death as a result of such ignorant short-sightedness.
