Police investigate two fatal crashes in Raleigh

From staff reportsJune 29, 2014

— Police say speeding was a factor in two motor vehicle crashes that occurred during the weekend and left two people dead.

Johnathon Gregory Taylor, 18, of Raleigh, was driving a 2008 BMW on Hunting Ridge Road near Tanbark Drive just after 10:30 p.m. Saturday.

Police say that Taylor, the BMW’s sole occupant, failed to maneuver through a curve, leaving the roadway and striking a tree on the driver’s side of the vehicle.

Taylor was dead at the scene, according to police spokesman Jim Sughrue. Investigators believe alcohol might also have been contributing factor in the crash.

At approximately 2 a.m. Sunday, a 2013 Subaru sedan driven by Christopher Scott Thompson, 20, of Raleigh was traveling west in the 500 block of Tryon Road when it crossed the centerline and collided head-on with an eastbound 2008 Suzuki sedan.

The driver of the Suzuki, Brittany Ann Phelps, 25, was declared dead at the scene, Sughrue reported. Thompson and two other occupants of the Subaru – Emily Ann Cates, 21, and Patricia Yvonne Bartley, 21, both of Fuquay-Varina –were transported to WakeMed in Raleigh for treatment of injuries not considered life-threatening.

Police cited Thompson for misdemeanor death by vehicle and for driving left of center, Sughrue reported.
