Kathleen Bennett: Stupid hats

July 4, 2014

I am a teacher with 17 years of experience and National Board Certification. I love my career, students and co-workers. However, I can’t afford to take care of myself on a salary that has not increased in six years. As I write this, I am beginning to look for teaching jobs outside of North Carolina. I have called Raleigh home for 17 years and may need to leave because our state is not taking care of those who are helping raise our youth.

Gov. Pat McCrory talks about “taking your stupid hat off” when it comes to situations that he feels warrant that condescending remark. Well, I believe that McCrory should take off his stupid hat and see the damage that he is doing by not financially supporting N.C. teachers. And it it may be time for me to take off my stupid hat and realize that I need to move on with my life in a state that values my work, dedication and passion for teaching.
