Carson, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Erick Torres struck at the death to hand Chivas USA a dramatic 1-0 win over the Montreal Impact on Saturday at the StubHub Center.
Chivas entered the match riding a nice wave of positive momentum following consecutive 1-0 wins over Real Salt Lake and the San Jose Earthquakes. Torres ensured the run of success continued with an acrobatic strike in the fourth minute of added time.
Earlier in the match, however, scoring chances were few and far between during a cagey first half in which the sides went to the intermission on level terms.
Montreal created the first quality chance of the match five minutes into the second half when Andres Romero collected the ball on the left flank and sent a tantalizing low ball across the face of goal, but Jack McInerney was unable to turn it home at the far post.
The Goats answered with a great opportunity of their own 11 minutes from time when a loose ball fell to the feet of Eric Avila on the edge of the penalty area. Avila rushed his shot, however and pulled it horribly wide of Troy Perkins' left post.
The fourth official's board showed four minutes of stoppage time and it looked as if the sides were going to be forced to share the spoils, but Torres made sure his side took all three points when he pounced on a loose aerial ball in the box and ripped it just inside Perkins' near post with an acrobatic bicycle kick finish.
The result extends Chivas' unbeaten run in league play to four matches, while Montreal remains at the bottom of the Eastern Conference table with 14 points.
