House members got some door prizes when they showed up for Tuesday’s budget negotiation. Senate Rules Chairman Tom Apodaca brought fistfuls of lottery scratch-off tickets to hand out.
The House in its budget proposed increasing spending on lottery ads while imposing new ad restrictions, an idea the Senate has repeatedly mocked.
Apodaca had a good number of tickets, but didn’t buy enough to make a dent in the budget.
There were no shrieks of joy in the room, so if there were any winners, they were discreet.
Rep. Mike Hager, a Republican from Rutherfordton, laughed when asked about his ticket. He scratched it. No luck.
“I lost,” Hager said. “Thanks, Apodaca, for nothing.”
