Threat call puts Rex Hospital, office building on lock-down

From staff reportsJuly 11, 2014

— Rex Hospital was locked down for a time and an adjacent medical office building was secured for most of Friday morning after someone called the hospital and told staff members that a gunman was at the facility.

No one with a gun was found, said Raleigh police spokeswoman Laura Hourigan. Police conducted a search from just before 9:30 a.m. through early afternoon.

“Rex obviously wanted to make sure and took necessary precaution,” Hourigan said.

Hospital spokesman Alan Wolf said that Rex Protective Services, the hospital’s security division, put the entire hospital on lock-down as a precaution after a threat was received by phone at 9:20 a.m.

The lock-down was scaled back to the office building at 4414 Lake Boone Trail at 10:06 a.m., Wolf said.

Authorities would not disclose why the office building was kept on lock-down longer.
