DURHAM — Duke redshirt junior safety Jeremy Cash was named to the watch list for the Jim Thorpe Award, which goes to the top defensive back in college football.
Cash, who also appeared on the preseason watch lists for the Bednarik Award and Nagurski Trophy, amassed 121 tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss, four interceptions, four pass breakups, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries last season.
A 2013 All-America second-team selection by USA Today and an All-ACC first-team pick by the league’s media, Cash is ranked as college football’s No. 7 safety by Lindy’s Sports. His 121 tackles were the second-most in the ACC – trailing only teammate David Helton’s 133 – and Cash totaled 10 or more tackles in five games last season.
Four Blue Devils earned spots on USA Field Hockey’s Junior Women’s National Squads.
Freshmen Alyssa Chillano and Alexa Mackintire were selected to the Under-21 junior national team, and classmates Sarah Furey and Ainsley Gill were named to the Under-19 squad for the 2014-15 season. All four were invited to Junior National Camp this week in Lancaster, Pa., after previously competing in the Under-21 Women’s National Championship, Futures Elite Championship or the National Futures Championship.
