RALEIGH — Thunderstorms that moved through the area Tuesday dropped more than 4 inches of rain at Raleigh-Durham International Airport, handily beating the record for the date.
The National Weather Service said it recorded 4.21 inches of rain, with 2 inches of that falling between 5 and 6 p.m.
The dates previous record was 2.8 inches in 1954.
In Durham, volunteer observers who work with the weather service recorded a maximum of 3.51 inches.
The rainfall pushed the year-to-date rainfall total at RDU to 27.47 inches, which is 4.71 inches wetter than normal.
There were no reports of major damage from the storm, though highways clogged because of accidents, and some trees were downed.
The weather service said the strongest recorded wind gust at the airport was 24 mph.
