Score free and super-cheap school supplies while grocery shopping at Harris Teeter and Kroger

When you’re on the hunt for the best prices on school supplies, it pays to look beyond the office-supply and big-box stores.

Sometimes, you’ll find superior deals on back-to-school basics at the grocery stores -- of all places.

This week is a great example.

The major grocery stores in the Triangle started a new week of sales today, Wednesday, July 16, and two stores have some of the most common school supplies at killer prices.

One of them you can get free after using a coupon found in last Sunday’s coupon inserts in The N&O.

Take a look:

At Harris Teeter this week, Angel Soft tissue is on sale for $1.

Use the .50/1 coupon from the July 13 Red Plum coupon insert and the box of tissues is free because Harris Teeter doubles coupons.

At Kroger this week, several school supplies are on special -- no coupon needed:

Twin pocket portfolios: 15 cents!

Spiral one-subject notebooks: 19 cents! Limit 10.

100-count index cards: 47 cents! Great deal.

Filler paper (150 sheets): 79 cents. Solid deal.

Crayola Classic markers (10 count): 99 cents. Also a solid deal.
