1st river barge in years lands in Sioux City area

The Associated PressJuly 17, 2014

— The first Missouri River barge in years to make it to the Sioux City area has arrived.

The barge landed Wednesday near CF Industries' Port Neal plant, which sits about four miles south of Sergeant Bluff. The barge was carrying equipment for the company's $1.7 billion expansion project. The machinery will be used to produce ammonia, an ingredient for the plant's nitrogen-based fertilizer products.

The Sioux City Journal reports (http://bit.ly/1yw7Mlr ) that the equipment was too massive to be hauled by road or rail.

Droughts and environmental squabbles about water releases have keep barge traffic from reaching the area since 2003.
