CHAPEL HILL -- Anti-war protesters marked the fifth anniversary of the war in Iraq with a march today on the UNC-Chapel Hill campus and in downtown Chapel Hill.
The march ended with speeches, drumming and dancing on the steps of the university administration building. Hannah Simmons, a studio art major at UNC, made several large figures carried by protesters.
"I thought the march would be bigger and better with bigger and better visuals," Simmons said of the figures covering their eyes, mouths and ears.
Simmons said she had been inspired by Vietnam-era protest art.
"We're trying to say, 'Troops out now,'" said Linda Gomaa, a senior and event organizer. "Not next week ... but now."
Organizers said 200-300 people attended.
