CHAPEL HILL - Journalist Roland Giduz was honored with the inaugural Horace Williams Award from the Preservation Society of Chapel Hill during this year's Old Fashioned July 4 celebration.

The award marks the 35th anniversary of the restoration of the Horace Williams house and the 150th birthday of UNC-Chapel Hill Professor Horace Williams.

The award, presented by Bill Friday, UNC-CH president emeritus, was a pen made from a black walnut tree from the property.

Giduz has been a writer, photographer, editor and politician, serving as Chapel Hill alderman for 12 years. He served as editor of the Chapel Hill News Leader, alumni editor for the university, compiled the "Newsman's Notepad" column over 35 years and continued his writing as a columnist for The Chapel Hill Herald.
