CHAPEL HILL - The administration buildings of the University of North Carolina system have been renamed the Spangler Center in honor of former UNC President C.D. Spangler Jr. and his wife, Meredith.

The UNC Board of Governors unveiled new signs for the buildings at a meeting today. The Spangler family participated in the event.

The main building, formerly known as the General Administration Building, was renamed for Spangler, who was UNC president from 1986 to 1997, and a connecting facility was renamed for Meredith Riggs Spangler.

"Words can't adequately convey what the Spangler family has meant to this university," UNC President Erskine Bowles said in a news release. "Dick and Meredith, working as a team, have given this university their all -- their time, their talents, and their treasures. They have invested heavily in this great institution -- both personally and professionally -- and by any measure, that investment has paid huge dividends for the people of North Carolina."

UNC officials said Spangler fought to keep tuition low and was vocal about the university's role as an engine for the state's economy.
