Snow flurries fell across the Triangle today as the coolest air so far this season spread over Central North Carolina.
While no accumulation was expected, the chilly temperatures are only a foretaste of what's in store for the Triangle tonight, the National Weather Service says. The overnight low is expected to be about 25 degrees.
Temperatures fell to about 35 degrees early this morning at Raleigh-Durham International Airport. Today's temperatures are expected to top out only in the upper 30s to low 40s -- and it will feel even colder as winds pick up this afternoon, the Weather Service says.
The forecast calls for sustained winds of 10 to 20 mph this afternoon, with gusts possibly surpassing 30 mph. That will drive wind chills into the 20s to lower 30s for much of the day, the Weather Service says. But even after the winds subside, the temperatures will remain cold.
The cold weather will be sticking around through Wednesday, with forecast highs in the low to mid-40s and an overnight low in the upper 20s. Daytime temperatures are expected to warm to the 50s for the remainder of the week, though lows are forecast to fall into the 20s again on Friday night.
