Ordering Papers
nie is going digital! The News & Observer Newspapers in Education program now offers an exact replica of The News & Observer online - free for classroom use. We've made this change for several reasons:
- To offer technology and curricula that may be used to master technology skills needed to compete for jobs in the 21st century
- To contribute toward a healthy environment
- To reduce our newsprint, production and delivery costs due to a changing economy
Best of all, the e-edition is FREE to students and teachers!
In The News & Observer's primary delivery area (Wake, Durham, Orange, and Johnston counties), print editions are still available for a charge of 25 cents each, but in other counties where delivery costs have become even more exorbitant, schools can only order e-editions.
Our registration process has also gotten an eco-friendly makeover. You can register, sign up for subscriptions, manage your account and access the e-edition from
our new website. Here's an overview of the registration process:
Step 1: Click here to start. You'll need to select a private login name and password for security purposes. You will also enter your name and school email address. The login and password will allow you to manage and change your account. Click the "Sign up" button to create your login and password and enter your school email address.
Step 2: After you see the "New Account - Thank You" page, you'll need to check your email inbox for an activation link. The email will have the subject line "Please activate your new account." Click on the link in the email to activate your account.
Step 3: You should now see the main menu page of the nie teacher registration system. Click on the "Place new order" button to begin placing an order.
Step 4: From the next screen, you will select your school and the calendar on which you teach. If yours is a 12-month position in a year-round school, select track 5. Enter your phone number at the school, the grades you teach, and the TOTAL number of students you
teach.
Step 5: The Subscription Schedule screen allows you to determine how long you want your subscriptions to last. Enter your start and stop date and days of week you want to order. If you don't fill this in, the default will be the day you order through the last day of the school year. You are also asked to select a NEW USER NAME and PASSWORD that your students (and you!) will use to access the free e-edition from school or home. You will access the E-edition by clicking on the blue "Login to the E-edition" link at the top of the right-hand column on the nie home page, newsobserver.com/nie. Free E-edition access is provided 7 days a week to all teachers who order through nie - even if you only order print copies.
NOTE: If receiving print copies of the newspaper is an option in your county, you'll need to select whether you want the free E-edition only or if you want to order print copies on one or more days of the week at a cost of 25 cents per copy. Whether ordering print or e-edition copies, you will need to indicate the number of copies you want (minimum of 5 copies). Then agree to the terms listed and select Continue. If you selected print copies, payment of 25 cents per copy will be due at the time of the order by credit card only.
Step 6: You will now see a Subscription Confirmation page outlining the details of your subscription. If everything looks good, click "Submit Order" to finalize your order. You will receive an email confirmation of your subscription as well - AND - you will have immediate access to the e-edition through a link that is provided! If you ordered print copies, your confirmation will also serve as a receipt.
NOTE: If you selected the print option, please allow 5 working days to process your order and start your newspaper delivery.
