With most of North Carolina's schoolchildren back in school, today might be a good day for grown-ups or for parents and preschoolers to visit the N.C. Zoo. The nation's largest walk-through natural-habitat zoo has polar bears, sea lions, river otters, alligators, elephants, gorillas, baboons, rhinoceros, giraffes and zebras. At the KidZone, children can have hands-on fun while learning more about the wild world of animals.

When: 9 a.m.- 5 p.m. Where: 4401 Zoo Parkway, Asheboro. Cost: $6-$10. Info: (800) 488-0444, www.nczoo.org.
