| It was standing room only as people strained to get a view of Chelsea Clinton as she spoke April 22 at the Terry Sanford Institute of Public Policy on West Campus at Duke University. This Modern Gothic building -- designed by Architectural Resources Cambridge -- opened in 1994. It is named for Terry Sanford, a former governor of North Carolina and U.S. senator who began his 15-year tenure as president of Duke University in April 1970. In 1971, he founded the Terry Sanford Institute for Public Policy, originally named the Institute for Policy Sciences and Public Affairs. Sanford, who died on April 18, 1998, is buried in the crypt in Duke Chapel. |
