Leadership Through Community Service

Junior Chamber of Commerce

What is the Raleigh Junior Chamber of Commerce?
The Raleigh Junior Chamber of Commerce, better known as the Raleigh Jaycees, is a not for profit organization run entirely by volunteers. Founded in 1921, the Raleigh Jaycees now have over 250 members between the ages of 21 and 40. The group’s motto is “leadership through community service.”

What does the group do?
The Raleigh Jaycees run over 100 projects every year and raise more than $100,000 annually to benefit state and local charities. The longest-running Jaycee project in the world is the Goodfellows project for underprivileged children, which is held during the holiday Christmas season.

How can you help?
The Raleigh Jaycees have six divisions where people can make a difference: volunteer community service; program fundraising; individual development courses; membership management; volunteer operation support; and raising operating funds.

N&O Volunteer
Will Stanley

As a Media Planner for McClatchy Web site realcities.com, Will Stanley works with clients to make sure their ideas become reality. As a volunteer with the Raleigh Jaycees, he demonstrates that community service is a powerful tool to help those who need it most. Participating in hundreds of programs over the last nine years, and stepping up to chair many of them himself, Will is a passionate advocate for positive change.

Will counts himself among those fortunate enough to be in service and says he’s gained valuable skills along the way. Currently, he is working to ensure that Christmas for kids from low-income families will be special, thanks to the Jaycees’ Goodfellows project. “Chairing the event was the most rewarding experience,” he explains of the 73-year-old program. “We really see what the meaning of the holidays is all about.”

Project Hope

A message from the publisher

The News & Observer has a long history of helping the community, through its journalism and its corporate or philanthropic support. We take our public service responsibilities seriously and fulfill them in many ways.

Perhaps you've seen some of our efforts. Recently, we have collected donations for hurricane victims. We participate in and support the Triangle United Way campaign. We are actively involved in the arts community. Our annual Kids Day project raises money for children's health services at WakeMed. And our employees volunteer at Triangle animal shelters, food banks, youth programs, literacy programs and many more organizations that build and improve our communities.

This year, The N&O will celebrate those good works with a new campaign called Project Hope.

Please watch for Project Hope ads in The N&O and our community publications during November and December. You'll meet some of our employees, see the ways they're helping make the Triangle a better place and have an opportunity to contribute to the organizations and causes for which they have such passion.

We're proud of our employees and delighted to highlight their service to our community.
