Raleigh pioneer pulls out

Over the past few years, a steady stream of new businesses have opened in downtown Raleigh, eager to get in on the ground level of the revitalization.

Many have been big hits. But being among the first doesn't necessarily guarantee success.

Iatria Spa and Health Center is closing its downtown location in the Progress Energy building at the end of this month. President Erika Mangrum said the decision was difficult because she's a Raleigh native and feels personally invested in reinventing downtown.

"We were one of the first ones to go down there in 2005," she said. "At some point, we've got to make a business decision."

Mangrum said downtown customers would buy gift certificates and then redeem them at one of Iatria's other three locations in Cary and Raleigh -- where business is up, she added.

"The residential [population] is not quite there to support a business like ours downtown yet," she said. "It will be."

Also in Raleigh, in Glenwood South, Cody's Chinese Bistro will close at the end of this month. Owner Cody Tseng said the slowing economy and rising food costs hurt business, plus "I'm trying to halfway retire." Cody's will replaced by an unaffiliated Thai restaurant in a few months.

Tseng's other restaurant, Peking Garden, at 126 Millbrook Road in Raleigh, will remain open. Cody's patrons are encouraged to use their gift certificates and credits before the April 30 closing date. But after that date, Peking Garden will accept them.

In Cary's Crossroads center off Walnut Street, A Goodnight Sleepstore will open in the old Bombay space this summer, and SAS Shoes will open late this summer next to Linens 'n Things.

There are a few changes coming to Raleigh's Crabtree Valley Mall:

* Bobbi Brown Cosmetics will open on the lower level near center court by the end of May.

* Another cosmetics store called Lush will open next to Bobbi Brown this summer.

* A Clarks England shoe store will open in the former Discovery Channel store late this summer.

* Crabtree & Evelyn will debut a new Crabtree store in the first-floor area that used to be Lord & Taylor early this summer.

* And Luggage & Leather has announced its final day: this Wednesday, April 16.

In Raleigh's Five Points neighborhood, Hayley's is open at 1803 Glenwood Ave. in the building that used to be Posh, selling women's clothing and accessories. Owner Hayley Cushman said she focuses on finding unique items that won't break the bank.

OTHER ITEMS: In Durham, wine shop BrandyWine Cellars is open in the Renaissance Center, across from The Streets at Southpoint. ... In Morrisville, Buffalo Wings & Rings will open in Grace Park at Davis Drive and Morrisville Carpenter Road in early fall. ... The Walgreens at Glenwood Avenue and Duraleigh Road in Raleigh will open April 20. ... The CVS at Creedmoor and Norwood roads in Raleigh will open in June. ... In Apex, Tyler's Taproom opened in the Beaver Creek shopping center, off U.S. 64.
