Durham's South Square Mall was torn down in 2002, but a new retail center is rising up on its old site.

Simply called South Square, the 450,000-square-foot shopping center near the intersection of U.S. 15-501 and Interstate 40 is anchored by Super Target, Sam's Club, Ross Dress for Less and Office Depot.

Still to come: Petco, Applebee's and Discount Tire. Petco will begin building soon and open in January 2006. Applebee's and Discount Tire haven't set opening dates yet, but construction on both will begin this summer or fall.

An additional seven or eight tenants will be housed in 13,000 square feet of retail space under construction now. Those spaces haven't been leased, though developer Faison Enterprises of Charlotte says it's in talks with several retailers. If deals are signed soon, stores might start opening in as little as 60 days.

The sudden closing of Greensboro's two Beyond Fitness gyms shouldn't concern the gym's Triangle-area members. Chad Davet, manager of the Waverly Place Beyond Fitness in Cary, said the Greensboro stores are under different ownership than the nine Triangle stores. There are no plans to close any of those gyms, he said, and Beyond Fitness is still working on a Wake Forest gym in the converted Athey Products plant.

North Raleigh's Poyner Place and Durham's Renaissance Center will soon be home to the Triangle's first Just Fresh restaurants. The Huntersville chain that specializes in fresh food and baked goods signed a deal for as many as eight Triangle locations in the next three to four years. The Durham store will open March 1, and the Poyner Place store will open in June. Other store locations haven't been selected yet.

Hillsborough Street in Raleigh is looking at two additions. First is Marrakesh Cafe at 2500 Hillsborough, a cafe taking over the former Starbucks spot. Second is Cartridge World, a chain that sells printing supplies and does ink cartridge refills, at 2516 Hillsborough.

Masti's hair salon in North Raleigh's Pembroke Square off Six Forks Road has teamed up with Fingers & Toes by Leslie Brady and esthetician Sonja Radford to offer manicures, pedicures, massages and more. All three operate from Masti's store, though they are separate enterprises.

Other items of note: Cary's South Hills Emporium has added an e-Bay auction drop-off store called ArmchairAuction. It's part of South Hill Emporium's existing store at 1301 Buck Jones Road and will help customers sell items on e-Bay. ... A new Dunkin Donuts-Baskin Robbins will open this spring at High House Road and N.C. 55 in Cary. ... The Rooms to Go Kids that will replace the vacant Oh! Brian's on Glenwood Avenue will begin construction in April or May and open this fall.
